Café Hop in Singapore

Antoinette Café

Set foot into Antoinette Café and get transported back into the Victorian era where some would say, the Queen’s dining room. Done up like a Parisian salon, this French-inspired patisserie is helmed by the culinary genius, Chef Pang Kok Keong who produces artisanal pastries and meticulously crafted cakes. Many chose to spend a leisurely afternoon in elegance or meet up over Sunday brunch at Antoinette Café in either the Penhas outlet or Mandarin Gallery.

The must-try cakes on the list are Violette (S$8.50) and Antoinette (S$9). Named after the flower itself, Violette is filled with fragrant violet butter cream with homemade raspberry marmalade spread around the sponge cake topped with berries. Antoinette, the namesake creation is a chocolate cake perfumed with the citrusy aroma of earl grey tea. You definitely would not want to leave the café without trying it. If you are going for something savoury, try the Antoinette Breakfast (S$24), a very hearty portion consisting of grilled bacon and sausage, your choice of egg, homemade bread, a basket of French pastries served with orange juice, coffee or hot chocolate.

Selfish Gene Café

Selfish Gene Café, situated a stone’s throw away from Outram Park made its’ appearance in 2011 and in no time at all made a name for itself as a popular hangout place with good coffee and scrumptious comfort food. Serving generous portion at affordable prices coupled with a great service crew left customers coming back for more.

Indulge in the scrumptious Breakfast Plate (S$15) consisting of scrambled eggs, pork sausage, sautéed mushroom and cherry tomato confit served with toasted brioche if you’ve got your hunger game on. If you’re looking at something light, perhaps you can give the Homemade Yogurt (S$6) a try. Smooth yogurt mixed with summer berry compote topped on by granola offers a healthier choice. Not to be missed is the namesake Gene’s Toast (S$15) where the brioche French toast is drizzled with balsamic caramel, bacon onion crumble and strawberries topped off with a generous scoop of rich vanilla ice cream. This house specialty can be very filling and it is obviously sinful but taste oh-so-good you just can’t help yourself.

The Bravery

Heard of The Plain and Ronin? Yes, they’re the folks who opened The Bravery café, too. With no signage and an indefinable door, many wouldn’t know even if they pass by the shop front save for pictures going viral on Instagram and Facebook. Thank God for internet! Decorated with fairy lights and colourful bulbs, The Bravery gives off a friendly and hip vibe suitable for youngsters.

Famous for making exceptional coffee, The Bravery made its’ name with their signature Lavender Latte (S$5.50) which is definitely worth trying. The slight lavender taste that blends perfectly into the aroma of smooth coffee makes the latte just nice for taking. Pamper your sweet tooth and go for the exceptional Pancakes Stack (S$15). Featuring a triple stack of buttery and fluffy pancakes, this sweet dish is served with bananas, ricotta cheese, crusted pistachios and drizzled with golden syrup.

23 Jumpin

Tucked away in a sleepy industrial area lies a quaint little café by the name of 23 Jumpin. Frequented by office workers around Tai Seng and repeat customers, this cafe is almost always packed to the brim with people since their seating is kind of limited. Décor was done sparingly and in return customers are not saddled with GST or service charge.

Among the most ordered delicacy in this gem of a café is the Honey Paprika Wings (S$8). Crunchy outside and juicy inside, these 10pieces of halved wings are drizzled with generous portion of honey and topped with paprika and parsley leaves. Famous for their specialty dishes, the local favourite is the Spicy Aglio Olio (S$12) where angel hair spaghetti is cooked together with bits of bacon and ham, olive oil, fragrant garlic, parsley and chilli flakes sprinkled with sea salt for the added oomph.

Another must-try dish is the creative invention of Pizza Waffles (S$14), something different from your typical flatbread.  The perfect combination of savoury topping with sweet fluffy waffles will leave you asking for more. There are 2 choices to choose from, Mushroom and Hawaiian, or go half-half and try out both delectable flavours.
